“Paradise Erased — A Memoir That Breathes

History, Love, and Loss:

Some books don't just tell a story, they open a door, and suddenly you're inside someone else's memory.

Paradise Erased: Chronicle of an Exile by Miguel Ángel Monzón is one of those rare works that invites you in and refuses to let you leave unchanged.

Rather than focusing on the political headlines that shaped 1970s Colombia, Monzón takes us directly into the everyday intimacy of life childhood friendships,

birthday cakes, the comfort of family, and the slow-building rhythm of a world that feels safe.

Then, like a pressure crack beneath the surface, that world shifts.

What begins in sunlight turns into shadow.

Childhood as a Sanctuary:

The most striking chapters are the early ones:

filled with heart, color, music, and imagination.

Santa Marta becomes a living character in the book - beaches glowing with moonlight,

streets vibrating with carnival energy,

and landscapes that feel timeless.

It's here that Monzón shines most: offering a portrait of innocence so vivid that the reader feels part of it.

These pages carry warmth, laughter, tenderness, and a mother's devotion - the kind of moments that shape a person before they even know who they are.

Darkness Arrives Quietly:

When the story shifts toward danger and political unrest, the tone changes sharply and purposefully. The pacing accelerates. The tension rises. Familiar streets become

unfamiliar.

Trust evaporates:

Instead of telling us how frightening the era was, the author shows us through the disappearance of people, through police silence, and through the creeping

awareness that safety is a fragile illusion.

There is a cinematic quality to these scenes: urgent, atmospheric, and hauntingly real.

Craft, Voice, and Structure:

Monzón's writing style is elegant without being heavy, reflective without being distant. He delivers memory with emotional honesty and historical accuracy, but also with

a storyteller's rhythm.

Final Reflection:

Paradise Erased isn't simply a book you read.

It is a book you experience.

A book you carry.

A book that whispers long after the last page closes.”

Thought-provoking captivating!

Paradise Erased is a beautifully written, hard-hitting, gripping, captivating, heartbreaking, heartwarming, emotional, and thought-provoking true story of a long, dangerous, heroic and brave fight for justice, freedom and a better future.

Miguel creates a vivid and compelling picture of both sides of Columbia in the 1970s and early 80s. The picturesque Paradise tourist destination. And the much darker, brutal, and violent uprising of the drug cartels and ever-growing pockets of corruption law enforcement agencies. Preying on the poorest and most vulnerable parts of the country. Even targeting unassuming tourists who visit the country. Naive to its dark and dangerous underbelly.

Miguel eloquentlv and powerfully narrates his mother and ever-growing pockets ot corruption law enforcement agencies. Preying on the poorest and most vulnerable parts of the country. Even targeting unassuming tourists who visit the country. Naive to its dark and dangerous underbelly.

Miguel eloquently and powerfully narrates his mother, Carmen's selfless, courageous, and brave journey as a military veteran and F2 police employee. Who risks everything to blow her corrupt colleagues and their vile and murderous actions wide open to seek justice for their victims and elicit an all-important change in the system from the bottom up.

Despite losing everything, including precious time with her son. Carmen manages to shield Miguel from a large majority of the violence and upheaval. Shielding him from her own physical, mental, and emotional feelings whilst keeping him safe, happy, and, more surprisingly, pursuing education.

Even in the face of losing literally everything that she had ever built and worked for. Carmen still devoted her life to working and caring for others. Sometimes at her own cost. Something that has clearly been passed on to Miguel.

Paradise Erased is a story that will stay with me and one that I thoroughly recommend. It has inspired me immensely, and I feel privileged and grateful to both Carmen and Miguel for their sacrifice, strong moral compass, and tireless work, selflessness, service, and for sharing their story.
